Don’t miss this turn. Although, a brief detour will take you into El Golfo for a gas stop and bathrooms.
Soon you will travel along the edge of the Sea. There are some fantastic photo opportunities along here. There are many areas to pull off for a quick photo! Just watch the sand and don’t get stuck.
Take a moment to check out nature and ecology info posted at the two Ecology Stations.
Grab a cold drink and a snack at El Solito overlooking the Sea of Cortez.
You will come to an intersection (make a left). Then, another set of railroad tracks to cross and you will come to the main highway.
Another intersection. (Right) Watch for fast moving traffic as you enter the highway.
Continuing towards town, there is a Pemex station on the left. (Where our log ends).

San Luis
As you leave town, you will encounter a brief Detour.
Then you will Turn south onto Hwy SON 197 This is the new toll road.
The toll booth. Estacion Doctor. The cost is 94 pesos. Bathrooms are available.
After a fast, straight drive on the toll road, you will cross railroad tracks. Then you will make a left turn to HWY 003.
Soon you will see the military check-point. Vehicles are only checked heading north. But slow down and follow the signage & directions through this area.
You will soon be able to see the Sea of Cortez off to your right. What a beautiful contrast of sand dunes & blue sea.
These funky, old “Icky Igloos” will remind you the turn off to Penasco is just ahead!
